Meadowood helps the Red Cross following Hurricane Katrina

Residents at Meadowood aid Red Cross

BLOOMINGTON- When Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast, workers at Meadowood Retirement Community had been elbow-deep into planning two events for the residence's 25th anniversary.

Residents quickly opted to cancel the two formal parties, instead intending to donate the $6,000 to $8,000 they would have cost to the American Red Cross.

But a call for additional donations from residents resulted in another, unexpected surprise.

So far, Meadowood residents have donated more than $20,000 to the Red Cross - a sum that doesn't yet include the money for the parties, Meadowood executive assistant Jan Skinner said.

In addition, donations keep coming. The residential living facility will accept donations for the Red Cross through Sept. 16.

Meadowood dedicates Founders Room

Herald-Times Report
September 19, 2005

The Founders Room, a new addition to Meadowood's main floor, was dedicated Friday.

The room was named in honor of Josephine Piercy and Herman B Wells, who conceived the idea of a community such as Meadowood, and the IU Retirement Community Inc., designated Founders and the Founding Board of 1977-78.

Representatives from Indiana University, the IU Alumni Association and the IU Foundation joined representatives from city government in the celebration.  Jim Perin of the IU Foundation talked about Herman B Wells' dream of a retirement community near the campus.  Bob Wheeler, president of OFC, the corporation that holds Meadowood, announced the decision to build a new 50-unit assisted living facility with a dementia unit. Plans are under way with an architect and will proceed within the next year. Susan Bookout, Meadowood's executive director, announced that in celebration of Meadowood's 25th anniversary, the owners, residents, friends and staff of Meadowood made two contributions.

One was a $24,000 gift to the American Red Cross, and the promise of more in the near future.

The other will be given this November when Meadowood sponsors half of a Habitat for Humanity house. Residents and staff contributed $15,000 and Meadowood added $10,000 for a total of $25,000.
